2012 Olympic Awareness

Important Things To Know Before You Plan Your Move To London.

The main focus will be in and around the Olympic Park located in Stratford East London. Three further Olympic venues will be used in the East and South-East London. Events will also be held in the centre of the city. Rowing events take place in the West of London near Windsor, with sailing events in Weymouth and road races heading into Surrey. There will be a potential impact on moves into and out of London before, during and for a period after the Olympic Games.

The Facts:

  • 2.6% of London’s roads will be used by the Olympic Route Network.
  • 79 junctions along the 56 miles of ”Games Lanes” will be closed.
  • 256 parking bays affected - 20 suspended, 27 relocated, and 109 with adjusted hours of operation (6 a.m. to midnight).
  • Road closures will be in place for the 16 days of the Games from 27 July and scaled down for the Paralympics from August to September.
  • There will be stopping and loading restrictions in place.
  • Incremental disruptions are expected for up to three months after the Games.

Key Dates:

  • 27 June - Media venues open
  • 13 July - Official Opening of the Olympic Village
  • 27 July - The Olympic Opening Ceremony
  • 28 July - 12 August - Olympic Games
  • 13 August - 16 August - Olympic Games Departure
  • 29 August - 9 September - The Paralympics
  • 10 - 12 September - Paralympics Games Departure
  • 14 September - Olympic Park Closes

The Olympic Route Network links all the competition and key non-competition venues for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. They comprise 2.6% of London’s roads. The core route will be operational from 6 a.m. until midnight, these being between Central London, the Olympic Park (North Greenwich Arena), and Excel. Some routes may operate both prior to and after the games to allow for arrivals and departures of athletes and officials. 56 miles of ”Games Lanes” will be accessible only to the athletes, officials, media, and emergency vehicles. 30 miles will have active restrictions or revised traffic management measures in place. Note: unauthorised vehicles will be fined up to £200 if found using the ”Games Lanes.”

Impact on the Movement of Goods:

Restricted airfreight and enhanced security measures by the Border Agency and customs departments will operate prior to the Games and throughout July, August, and September. Potential delays during customs clearance will occur, with the Olympic family taking priority before and after the games. Long delays are to be expected and heavy goods’ vehicles will not be allowed into certain areas between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. during the days that the Games are performing. Other temporary road restrictions are set to be implemented affecting stopping and loading. Large vehicles will only have authorised entry between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. within the restricted areas. In addition, there will be partial closure of streets creating access issues on certain roads, especially in the Greenwich area.

Cost Implications:

  • Anticipated increase in parking costs.
  • Additional storage and shuttle costs.
  • Loading/unloading restrictions - trucks will have to park further away from premises resulting in additional cost for access.
  • Double manning of vehicles will be required in order to speed up collection and delivery times; overtime and out-of-hours of working may be necessary.
  • Additional drivers needed as increased congestion will reduce the amount of work each driver is able to complete.
